The Connecticut Humane Society would like to honor Westport volunteer Patty Ricci-Chervin in this edition of PetCetera. She came to us in October of 2010 and has been a regular member of our Saturday team ever since. When she came on board she indicated that her reason for choosing CT Humane over other opportunities was because she believes strongly in our focus and in giving animals the best quality of life possible.
She recently offered the following insights:
“Thirteen years ago my then fiancé insisted that we get a dog. I had absolutely no interest. It soon became clear however that dog companionship was a prerequisite to the marriage! Doug grew up in a multi-dog home and as big a cliché as it sounds, turned me on to the unconditional love that dogs bestow. Our 2 Vizslas, Rudi and Rusti, are my first dogs. The decision to have dogs truly changed my life. I tend to immerse myself in the things I become passionate about. My experiences with our dogs led to self-education in terms of animal rescue (Rusti is a rescue), the continuing need for education, the struggles with appropriate legislation, and the overall need for advocacy for both domestic and farm animals. The only missing piece was hands on involvement. I work full time so volunteering was my best option. I did some research and felt CHS was a good match for me. I finally decided to stop making excuses and just do it. The decision led to my meeting some of the most selfless, like-minded, compassionate folks I’ve ever known and has been more fulfilling than I could have imagined. The camaraderie is infectious among the volunteers and staff at CHS. Each person brings his and her own brand of love for the animals to the table. On Saturday mornings I can expect to be frozen, soaked to the skin, or pooped and slobbered on by some of the most deserving beasts on the planet. I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I basically have no spare time anymore but manage to fit in some of my other favorite activities like baking, decorating, shoe shopping and partaking in a never ending search for the perfect Cosmo!”
Patty, we are overjoyed that you are able to dedicate some of your spare time to the Connecticut Humane Society and our pets. And we couldn’t be more pleased to hear about how much you are enjoying your experience. Your compassion and support are more appreciated than you will ever know. Thank you!
