BRISTOL – Human and canine representatives of the Connecticut Humane Society came to Jennings School on Friday to thank the Torch Club and accept its donations of items for the shelter.

The club, which consists of fifth graders who are members of the Boys and Girls Club’s Jennings Clubhouse, collected over 300 items of food, bedding and toys, tripling last year’s total.

Alicia Wright, the society’s public relations director, visited the Jennings Clubhouse with Riley, a golden retriever, to collect the items and to talk to the group about how important their donations are to the animals.

She also went over pet safety, how to pick the right pet for their family, and how much they appreciate the donations and how they use them for the animals.  Each child was able to have a picture taken with Riley.  Then everyone helped load the van with all the items collected.

This year, the group completed two community projects.  In February, the children made and delivered valentine magnets and cards for 150 residents at Sheriden Woods.

Their society donation project was held for the whole month of May.  The students constructed a cardboard doghouse to hold all items collected.
