Spay and neuter appointments are scheduled for healthy animals only.  If your pet has a medical concern you must schedule an examination with one of our doctors.  On the morning of your appointment and prior to surgery, the Fox Memorial Clinic will perform a pre-anesthetic examination on your pet.  You will not be present for this examination. If the veterinarian determines that your pet is not healthy enough for surgery, we will not proceed further.  We will contact you to recommend a more comprehensive appointment to discuss medical treatments and diagnostics.  The pre-anesthetic examination is included in the surgery fee.  If your pet has a known medical condition or concern we will not admit your pet.

Our recommended age requirements for spaying and neutering is four months and older.

• IMPORTANT!  Do not feed your pet after 10:00 p.m. the night before surgery.  (Water is okay to provide throughout the night).  If you feed your pet we will require a non-refundable deposit to reschedule.

• Estrus (heat cycle) – If your dog is in heat at the time of your scheduled spay appointment; it may be necessary to reschedule.   Additional fees will apply if your dog is spayed while in heat. There are additional charges for female animals that are mature, pregnant or excessively overweight at the time of their spay surgery.

• Please bring with you any vaccination paperwork you may have.  In accordance with Connecticut State Law, we will vaccinate your pet for rabies if previous proof of immunization is not provided.

• Cats must be in a pet carrier and dogs must be on a leash.

• Cancellation policy – All scheduled spay and neuter appointments will require a 24-hour notice to reschedule to a new date.  Without the required notice, we will be unable to schedule a new appointment without a $25 non-refundable deposit.  Please note that female dogs may incur a higher rate by rescheduling due to heat cycles.

• If someone else is bringing in your pet they must be listed on the Spay/Neuter Consent Form which authorizes them to act on your behalf and to make any decisions regarding the treatment and surgery procedure for your pet.

• Upon release you will be given a spay/neuter certificate and home care instructions.  Please be sure to keep your certificate.  In the case of dogs, you will need this for licensing purposes.

To schedule an appointment you must submit a completed three page Spay/Neuter Consent Form.  If you prefer we can email or fax you a copy; or you may send us a stamped, self-addressed envelope to request one; or stop by our office for a copy.

We must have this paperwork to schedule an appointment. Please email the completed form to foxspayneuter@cthumane.org or fax the form to: 860-665-1241.

For the overall health of your pet, we recommend that you consider the services below at the time of your spay/neuter appointment.  Please make the selections that are appropriate for your pet on the Spay/Neuter Consent Form.

Retained Deciduous Teeth (the failure to lose baby teeth):
Just like humans, dogs and cats have two sets of teeth. The deciduous or baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth.  Occasionally the permanent teeth do not erupt immediately, and therefore do not force the baby teeth out.  These retained baby teeth can cause crowding and future oral problems.  Retained baby teeth require anesthesia to be extracted.  If your pet has retained baby teeth, we recommend having them removed them at the time of the spay/neuter appointment.

Recommended Vaccinations/Diagnostic Testing for Dogs

DHPP/DHLPP (Distemper/Hepatitis/Parainfluenza/Parvovirus/Leptospirosis):  Annual vaccination. These diseases are debilitating, highly contagious and can cause death.  DHPP vaccination fee is $20.00
If your dog is over 15 lbs and is exposed to environments that are frequented by wildlife, we recommend
a DHLPP vaccination (DHPP with leptospirosis).   DHLPP Vaccination fee is $24.00

Lyme disease:  This is a bacterial disease transmitted by the deer tick.  The vaccination is recommended for any dogs that are exposed to ticks.   Vaccination fee is $24.00

Bordetella:  Tracheobronchitis (kennel cough) is a highly contagious virus and bacterium causing a dry hacking that can persist for six or more weeks.  This preventative vaccine is indicated for those dogs entering boarding kennels or grooming salons. Vaccination fee is $22.00

Heartworm/Lyme/Anaplasmosis/Erlichia Test:  Canine heartworm is the most dangerous of all canine parasites.  It is spread by mosquitoes, so all dogs are at risk.  A positive heartworm test can put your dog at a higher risk for undergoing anesthesia.  For this reason, if your dog is six months of age or older we recommend a heartworm test prior to anesthesia. Test fee is $44.00 and includes diagnostics for the following tick-borne diseases: Lyme, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis.

Recommended Vaccinations/Diagnostic Testing for Cats

Feline Distemper/FVRCP (Distemper/Rhinotracheitis/Calici/Panleukopenia):  Annual vaccination. These diseases are highly contagious and can cause death.  Vaccination is your pet’s only protection.  Vaccination fee is $17.00

Feline Leukemia:  Similar to the Aids virus, the FeLV virus severely depresses the immune system so that the cat’s body can’t fight off infection and other diseases.  The feline leukemia virus is a major cause of death in cats and the vaccine is recommended for outdoor cats.   Testing for feline leukemia should be done prior to vaccination.  Vaccination fee is $17.00 (If done at same time as FVRCP, the combination fee is $24.00)

Feline Leukemia/FIV Test (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus):  Both of these viruses are a major cause of death in cats.  There is no successful treatment.  It is important to test all cats as these diseases can be transmitted from mother to newborn or can lay dormant in a cat for years before becoming symptomatic.  Test fee is $42.00
