LEGISLATIVE ALERT, May 20, 2013:
Coordination of Emergency Sheltering for Animals Bill Passes the House Unanimously!
HB6488 passed the House unanimously last week. This is a bill that would require: • Local civil preparedness advisory councils to include representatives of local and state animal humane organizations. • Towns to consider including in their emergency plans operational provisions for the non-military evacuation of pets and service animals and temporary sheltering of pets. This bill provides critical preparation standards in statute to ensure that Connecticut’s animal owners and shelters are prepared to face the next natural disaster that could occur. Please call your Senator and urge them to pass HB6488 for the Connecticut Humane Society! Find your representative at this link: http://www.cga.ct.gov/asp/menu/CGAFindLeg.asp
LEGISLATIVE ALERT, MAY 14, 2013:
The House of Representatives unanimously passed HB6311 “AN ACT PROHIBITING MUNICIPALITIES FROM ADOPTING BREED-SPECIFIC DOG ORDINANCES.” Please contact your State Senator today to urge their support for HB6311 which will ensure that rescue dogs are not prevented from being adopted by willing prospective owners. HB6311 would change state statute and specifically prohibit any municipality in Connecticut from instituting breed-specific dog ordinances outlawing the possession of any kind of dog. This bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives last week but needs to pass the Senate in order to be considered by the Governor. Please call your State Senator today and urge for their support of this bill! Find your representative at this link: http://www.cga.ct.gov/asp/menu/CGAFindLeg.asp
LEGISLATIVE ALERT, May 7, 2013:
Please contact your legislator today to urge their support for HB5027, “AN ACT PROHIBITING THE SALE OF DOGS AND CATS OBTAINED FROM SUBSTANDARD DOMESTIC ANIMAL MILLS AND REQUIRING A STANDARD OF CARE APPLICABLE TO ANIMAL IMPORTERS.” HB5027 would change the current practices in local pet shops by requiring that only dogs and cats humanely received from animal control facilities and non-profit rescue organizations be sold or adopted in Connecticut. Passing this legislation will also prohibit the operation of substandard domestic animal mills in Connecticut and encourage these standards for companion animals in surrounding states that also do not have these protections. HB5027 provides a best opportunity for a companion animal rescued in Connecticut to find a home Please take a moment to urge your legislator to pass this important bill! Thanks to the Connecticut Humane Society and the hard work of many other Connecticut pet lovers, Pet Trust legislation that will allow pets to be included in estate planning, has been signed into law!
Utilizing the first-hand experiences the Connecticut Humane Society acquired in New Orleans in 2005, we continue to prepare for future disasters. The Connecticut Humane Society helped sponsor federal legislation (PETS Act of 2006) requiring that service animals and pets must be included in any official disaster rescue planning. And we sponsored local legislation introduced during the 2006 Connecticut session to require that pets and service animals be a part of state disaster planning after our work in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
