STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY
Society must work together to put an end animal cruelty. From humane societies to Animal Control to the common citizen, all of us play an important role. Find out how you can help...
|
Know The Law
One of the most important components in enforcing anti-cruelty statutes and in working with lawmakers to improve conditions for animals is to know and understand the current laws.
In the State of Connecticut there are two major sets of statutes that pertain to domestic animals: Anti-Cruelty Statutes and Statutes that detail the legal responsibilities of individuals who own and/or care for animals. The second set of statutes also address the rights and responsibilities of animal control authorities.
It is also important for the citizens of Connecticut to work with lawmakers to change and improve current law. Contact your State Representatives.

Recognize the Signs of Cruelty
For any of us to be effective in working with the law to protect pets, it is important to learn the potential indicators of cruelty and neglect. Understanding these elements will help us all to collaborate with our local animal control departments. Signs of Cruelty.
If you suspect that you have encountered a situation that could fall under the guidelines of animal cruelty, you should contact your local animal control department and make a report. They are the individuals who have the legal responsibility of investigating complaints.

Stop Puppy Mills In Their Tracks
Current statistics estimate that 95% - 99% of all puppies and kittens available for sale in retail pet stores come from puppy and kitten mills. Help us put an end to this type of cruelty. These "mills" utilize breeding practices that treat live animals as if they were objects. Their only interest is to make a profit. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of the health, genetics, behavior and humane treatment of all animals involved. Stop Puppy Mills.

Make Shelter Adoption Your First Option!
Thank you for considering shelter adoption as your first option when choosing a new pet to bring into your family. By adopting one of the many homeless animals currently awaiting placement, you are truly making an impact in preventing the cruel circumstances that befall many pets.
But The Connecticut Humane Society understands that for some people, raising a pure-bred puppy or kitten is very important for a variety of different reasons. If you have come to that decision, please...don't give your business to a pet store or an online business that could ultimately be impossible to thoroughly research. Learn the facts and work with a local, reputable breeder.

Like So Much Trash...
On a warm, August afternoon our staff received a desperate call. A trash bag was found in a dumpster and it was moving. Thinking that someone may have been trying to hurt an infant, the Good Samaritan rushed to the bag and ripped it open. Instead of a baby, she found a kitten that someone had thrown away with the trash. Unable to keep the kitten for her very own, she brought the kitten to our Newington Headquarters for adoption into a new home... A home where "Luna" would never be treated like trash again!
