Volunteering at the Shelter

Volunteering in one of the shelters is a rewarding way to help pets in need. In fact, many volunteers describe it as the best day of their week! Some volunteers work directly with the animals, while others assist with administrative work “behind the scenes.”

To be considered for a volunteer position in one of the shelters, you must meet the following requirements.

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have active health insurance
  • Be able to commit to at least six months of service
  • Be able to volunteer at least once a week, on a set schedule, for a minimum of 2 hours per week
  • Be able to work independently without direct supervision
  • Be reliable and committed

If you are under the age of 18, please visit the Service Projects section of the website for information about how you can get involved.

How do you get started?

Step One: Learn about the Current Volunteer Needs and the requirements for each position.

Step Two: Complete the volunteer application for the position you are interested in filling.

Step Three: Selected applicants will be invited in for a volunteer interview. This is a chance for us to get to know you, and for you to learn about the specific job you will be performing. The interview helps us both to determine if the program is a good fit.

Step Four: Attend a general orientation and any required training sessions for your selected volunteer position. The orientation acquaints you with the organization so that you have a broad understanding of how we achieve the mission. At the orientation you will be given a Volunteer Handbook, and will be asked to sign the liability waiver. The job-specific training will help you carry out your duties.

Step Five: Get started! Once you have completed these important steps to becoming a volunteer, you will be added to the official volunteer roster and given a start date and time. Although we’ll ask you commit to a minimum of 6 months of service, many volunteers stay much longer!

Meet some of the volunteers and learn how you can make a difference in pets’ lives.
