Animal Behavior Technician, Newington
The Connecticut Humane Society has an immediate opening for an Animal Behavior Technician in our Newington Shelter. Primary responsibilities include conducting canine temperament testing in accordance with SAFER standards, creating and maintaining the shelter dog training program and creating and implementing behavior modification plans for the behavior dogs in the shelter. Additional primary responsibilities include record keeping, maintaining detailed training logs for the shelter animals and assisting with the development and application of a behavioral foster program. The responsibilities of this position are all designed for the purpose of extending the emotional longevity of the shelter dogs and therefore helping them to be more adoptable regardless of the length of their stay. This position will include a weekend schedule.

This full-time position with benefits is ideal for someone with at least two to three years’ experience working in animal behavior or training. Some experience in a shelter is preferred. SAFER certification is preferred. Degree in animal behavior is preferred. This position must also have strong verbal and written communication skills. We are looking for a creative, customer service oriented individual who can work well with the public and the team. Interested individuals must be able to adhere to a schedule, handle multiple priorities and enjoy a busy environment.

Position Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 -3 years behavioral or training experience preferred.
  • Degree in animal behavior is preferred.
  • SAFER Certification preferred.

Assistant District Manager - Newington
The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking an Assistant District Manager to oversee our Newington shelter. This position is responsible for managing and supervising the operation and flow of animals through the shelter.  In conjunction with the District Manager, this position is responsible for: providing oversight of animal custodial and remedial care, admissions, adoptions, behavior, medical and euthanasia, monitoring the general health of shelter animals and ensuring proper medical care is given, and regularly inspecting shelter property for needed repairs and maintenance.  This position will participate in the development of the annual budget for the shelters as well as identifying and implementing methods to reduce expenses/increase income as appropriate. The incumbent will be responsible for staff management, establishing and driving a culture of excellent customer service, providing regular, ongoing feedback and timely evaluations as well as working with the assistant district managers to address all employee problems and issues.

This full-time position with benefits is ideal for someone with a bachelor’s degree in business or animal science field (preferred). Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the animal sheltering/welfare or veterinary setting required as well as at least two (2) years of supervisory experience. This position needs to have the ability to evaluate and solve problems and have sound judgment and effective decision- making skills. We are looking for a positive, creative, customer service oriented individual who can work well within and lead a team. Interested individuals must be able to be a leader, handle multiple priorities and enjoy a busy environment. This position includes working a weekend day.

District Manager - Newington/Westport
The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking a District Manager to oversee our Newington and Westport shelters. Shelter Veterinarian - Newington Based
The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking a Shelter Veterinarian. This position will help fulfill our mission by providing surgical and medical care to shelter animals. This position will perform high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgeries, as well as handle additional surgical procedures including, but not limited, to: cystotomy, growth removal, and basic orthopedics. This position will also help to ensure that staff is following herd health protocols and proper sanitation practices. This position may be required to provide medical and surgical coverage in the other shelters or the clinic.

This full-time position with benefits is ideal for someone with a degree in veterinary medicine from an accredited school of veterinary medicine.  This position must have a current license to practice in the state of Connecticut. Must have two to five years’ experience working in a shelter or a high volume spay/neuter practice. This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills. This position includes travel and may require some weekend coverage.

Position Requirements:

  • Degree in veterinary medicine from an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
  • Current license to practice in the state of Connecticut.
  • At least two to five years’ experience working in shelter or high volume spay/neuter clinic.
  • Travel required.
  • Proficiency in on-line medical records a plus.
