It is nearly impossible to imagine how anyone could harm a puppy no less to such a degree that it causes an actual leg fracture. But that is what happened to Artie. An Animal Control Officer who partners with CHS brought this young and lovable dog to the Connecticut Humane Society in Newington for treatment knowing that without specialized care, Artie was not going to do well at all.
The CHS team flew into action stabilizing Artie who while even in great pain, managed to lick the hands of those caring for him. His X-rays indicated a really nasty fracture that was going to require the help of an orthopedic specialist in order to determine the right course of treatment. Because of the type and location of the fracture, the recommended course of action meant that Artie was going to lose his leg.
Within days of the surgery, Artie was feeling much more like himself and eager to share his love and enthusiasm for life with his caregivers. And actually with anyone who came to visit him. What was even more amazing was how Artie became so adept at figuring out how to move, walk, play and even run. Now he was ready for adoption!
His search ended quickly because he caught the eye of a CHS staffer. She had been monitoring his progress and had fallen hopelessly in love with the little guy. It was surely love at first sight!
It has been a little over a month since Artie went home and he’s no longer little. He’s growing by leaps and bounds and has become the best of friends with Henry, the other dog in the home. Artie’s new family reports that the two boys are best buddies who become upset if they aren’t with each other.
While we all may recoil at what happened to Artie, he seems today to care less as he lives out a dog’s life with Henry and his human family. Three legs? Not a problem for Artie.
