Volunteer Opportunities, Newington

Read below to learn about current volunteer openings at the Newington Pet Wellness and Adoption Center and the requirements for each position. If you see a position that meets your interests and availability, complete the online volunteer application. Selected applicants will be invited in for an interview.

Note: You must be 18 or older to volunteer. Students under 18 can get involved and earn service credits by completing a service project.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Newington Adoption Center

Dog Walkers

Love dogs? The Newington adoption center needs experienced dog owners to join the volunteer team. Volunteers walk and socialize the dogs during their stay. Volunteers must be able to manage dogs up to 120 lbs. and must be willing to work with dogs with minor behavior issues such as pulling on the leash, jumping, and dogs who become overly excited or are reactive towards other dogs. Safety training is provided.  

Requirements: 18+, have active health insurance, comfortable working around all sizes of dogs, be in good physical condition, able to work independently with limited supervision, must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively with staff, other volunteers and the public.

Commitment: 2 hours per week on a set-schedule for at least 6 months

Open Shifts:
Wednesdays 3:30PM-5:30PM


  

Biological Risk Management

The Newington adoption center needs volunteers to join the Biological Risk Management (BRM) team. BRM volunteers help control the spread of harmful diseases by working to keep the building clean and disinfected. Duties may include cleaning cat cages or dog kennels, sweeping, washing floors and walls, etc.

Requirements: 18+, have active health insurance, comfortable working around all types of animals, be in good physical condition, able to work independently with limited supervision, must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively with staff, other volunteers and the public.

Commitment: 2 hours per week on a set-schedule for at least 6 months

Open Shifts:
Mondays 8:00AM-10:00AM
Mondays 3:30PM-5:30PM
Sundays 8:00AM-10:00AM


  

Adoption Desk Assistant

The Newington adoption center is looking for a friendly volunteer with excellent customer service skills to assist at the Adoption desk. Desk volunteers greet customers, answer basic questions about the adoption process and utilize the animal database to look up and record information.

Requirements: 18+, have active health insurance, comfortable working around all types of animals, able to work independently with limited supervision, must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively with staff, other volunteers and the public. Excellent customer service, computer and phone skills.

Commitment: 2 hours per week on a set-schedule for at least 6 months

Open Shifts:
Fridays 9:30AM-12:30PM


  

Certified Dog Groomer

The Newington adoption center is looking for a certified dog groomer to work on site to bathe and groom the dogs each week.

Requirements: 18+, have active health insurance, comfortable working around all types of dogs, be in good physical condition, able to work independently with limited supervision, certified dog groomer or professional dog grooming experience, must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively with staff, other volunteers and the public.

Commitment: 2 hours per week on a set-schedule for at least 6 months

Open Shifts:
Wednesdays 12:30PM-3:30PM
